Bytesized
by baltdev

Font Info
Bytesized is an ultra-small monospace pixel font with 3x4 modulo diacritics, designed for readability within tight constraints. Despite limitations such as only supporting the Latin Core character set and unconventional glyph designs, it remains clear and legible. Named for its compact nature, this font can be stored in under 150 bytes when restricted to ASCII characters.

SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------
PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.
The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.
DEFINITIONS
"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.
"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).
"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).
"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.
"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical
writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software.
PERMISSION & CONDITIONS
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining
a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify,
redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font
Software, subject to the following conditions:
1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components,
in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.
2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy
contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be
included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or
in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.
3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding
Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as
presented to the users.
4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font
Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any
Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the
Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written
permission.
5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole,
must be distributed entirely under this license, and must not be
distributed under any other license. The requirement for fonts to
remain under this license does not apply to any document created
using the Font Software.
TERMINATION
This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are
not met.

Important!
The fonts here are the property of their authors and are freeware, open-source, or public domain. The licence shown is just an indication. Check the fonts readme files or the author's website for more details, or contact them if still unsure. If no author/licence is shown, it means that we lack info, not that it's free.
If you think we've made a mistake, or there is a copyright issue with this font, please report it.
Font Readme

Bytesized is a miniscule monospace pixel font - 3x4 modulo diacritics -
made to be as legible as possible within these restrictions.
The name comes from the fact that, if you restrict the font to ASCII only,
you can store it raw in just under 150 bytes!
While a few compromises had to be made to fit it into such a small profile,
namely only supporting the Latin Core character set,
and some "creative" glyph designs, so to speak,
it's still quite readable!
# Building
Bytesized is created dynamically from a spritesheet found in `sources/spritesheet.png`.
To set up for building and testing, run `make setup`.
In order to build the font, run `make build` at the root of the project.
This will create the TTF, and put it in `fonts/Bytesized-Regular.ttf`.
If you want to run any tests or create a proof, `make test` and `make proof` exist for those.
# Contribution
Contributions are welcome! Feel free to open a PR with any changes you may want to make. Make sure to add yourself to `CONTRIBUTORS.txt`.
To add a new glyph, you need to do three things:
1. Draw the new glyph in the spritesheet in `spritesheet.png`.
Each glyph has a bounding box of 3 wide by 10 tall, with 1 pixel of padding on each side,
but it's strongly recommended to keep it within 4 pixels tall - the box has 4 pixels for top diacritics,
4 pixels for the actual glyph, and 2 for bottom diacritics.
If at all possible, the regular bounding box should only be broken for diacritics.
2. Add a glyph name to `glyphnames.txt`
This name doesn't _have_ to match up with the glyph's canonical name, but it probably should.
3. Add the glyph's Unicode codepoint to a new line in `glyphset.txt`
Each line in this file contains `U+`, then a hexadecimal string dictating the Unicode codepoint the glyph represents.
# Changelog
## v1.000
- Initial release
## v1.001
- Properly handle dotless i/j
## v1.010
- Add Ŭ/ŭ
# Trivia
If you trim the font down to only 96 ASCII characters (0x20 through 0x7F), you can store each glyph in only 3x4 = 12 bits,
meaning you can store the entire font in only 144 bytes! You can see exactly that in `./spritesheet-raw.bin`.
In said file, each glyph is stored one after another in row-major order.
